Let's face it: Web programming can be cumbersome. Coming from the single-tiered and two-tiered C++ and Java worlds, Web-based technologies have always seemed unorganized in comparison. Where thick-client platforms use a single, cohesive object model, distributed platforms require an informal mixing of many object models to achieve similar ends. Learning how all those tools and languages work together for the first time can be about as comfortable as an enema, and only slightly less offensive. Now don't get me wrong. I, like many, have come to love the Internet and the opportunities it has opened. Most agree that a Web-enabled application - though sometimes more difficult to develop and debug than a thick-client application - is easier to maintain and ultimately reaches far more users.
